The biggest time waster:
Labeling your type of tilt.
Losing tilt, winning tilt, rushing tilt, river tilt, playing too long tilt, passive tilt, aggro tilt, under-rolled tilt, over-rolled tilt, bored tilt, injustice tilt…you get the idea.
Why is this such a waste of time?
Because labeling it tends to give the illusion that you’re making progress towards solving it. You get a little hit of happiness when you talk about it, which creates a sense of relief in the moment.
But the behavior still persists.
You keep doing dumb shit that’s very ineffective at getting what you actually want – to win and enjoy the game (or whatever else you want in life outside of poker).
What’s actually going on?
The one thing all these types of tilt have in common is there’s an experience going on internally of lots of thoughts and feelings you don’t like, and that you can’t seem to handle in the moment. You need to DO something about it, rather than accepting that it’s happening.
When you can’t accept that it’s happening internally, your behavior changes in a way that’s not very effective at getting what you want.
You’re no longer interacting with what you truly want.
In those moments, you’re more interested in changing what you feel, at whatever cost that comes with.
For some, it can be more extreme distractions and numbing – drugs, alcohol, sex, porn
For others, it can be a bit less destructive – using the phone, video games, eating a little too much
And for the high achieving crowd – they tend to get really busy and bury themselves in work and healthy habits, while never actually feeling happy and satisfied. They can exist under the illusion of getting a lot of things done, but internally, they’re still very much suffering.
Different types of people, different ways of avoiding the feeling.
So ditch the labels, get real clear on what’s going on inside anytime emotions show up, and learn to accept whatever is happening, as it’s happening.
From there, you’ll stop wasting time trying to change what you feel, and be able to spend all your time and energy working towards what you truly want.
