Bring the magic back

Something I often ask clients:

What was poker like when you first started playing?

And every time, they notice their relationship with it has changed completely. There’s no longer an excitement and curiosity for the game they fell in love with.

They have a whole lot more knowledge and experience now.

What comes with that?

Thoughts about what should happen.

What lines you should take.

What hours and limits you should play.

What kind of results you should have.

In other words, you end up with a whole bunch of stories stuck in your head about how reality should be playing out.

And just like that, the curiosity is gone.

And you no longer show up with an excitement around having no idea what’s going to happen.

But it doesn’t have to be like that.

You just have to learn how to get out of your own way.

It used to be the norm.

Now you only stumble into it every once in a while.

But if you can learn to get out of your head, and undo all the awful conditioning the poker community creates around what things are supposed to look like, you’ll be able to feel the excitement you used to.

And really, it’s pretty simple.

It’s just hard when you’re the one stuck in it.
