Where do my best ideas come from?
In the shower, right before I fall asleep, and while doing the dishes.
Why?
I don’t need anything to change in those moments. There’s total acceptance of what’s happening, and how I feel about it.
A nice relaxing warm shower.
A cozy, warm bed.
A simple task I don’t need to think about, and one that leaves me with a small sense of accomplishment at the end.
When you don’t need anything to change, your mind can start to wander and make new connections. Thoughts can arise, and insights happen. Insights lead to you understanding yourself and the world around you differently. And new understandings will shape how you experience the world going forward.
Total acceptance leads to new experiences.
You don’t even have to take any action for those new experiences.
You just have to start by accepting what’s going on internally.
If you live like this all the time?
You’ll consistently come up with new ideas and never feel stuck. It’s pretty great, and I highly recommend it.
But the trick is you have to do it all the time.
Otherwise your head will just keep spinning while you’re trying to go to sleep at night.
You’ll have all those fake arguments in the shower.
And the dishes will be a nuisance.
It’s all or nothing.

In poker?
Same thing – you have to do it all the time, not just when the big spot comes up.
If you want to leave room for new insights about the game, and the people you play with, then you’re going to have to accept everything as it happens.
When emotions start piling up, and your mind can’t seem to calm down, you’ll just start making the same mistakes you always do.
And that sucks.
A lot.
